News and Events Summer 2010
There have been some changes in personnel: we welcome Richard Pearce who will join us in June as a Harbour Assistant to replace Jason Bunce who leaves us to go fishing, we wish him well. Jess Brant joined us in April to understudy Jayne Orchard and be able to step in when Jayne leaves to have a baby and take maternity leave. We welcomed Mr Dave Atkin, Port Manager of ABP Teignmouth and Plymouth, as a new Commissioner, he was appointed in January to replace retiring Commissioner Mr Mark Rowe of Sibelco.
Our Harbour staff consist of Harbour Master: David Vaughan; Harbour Assistants: Humphrey Vince (Moorings), Fred Pearce (Teign C), Marcus Walton, Richard Pearce and our Harbour Administrators: Suzanne Nicholson, Jayne Orchard, Judith Burridge and Jess Brant .
We have now been at Old Quay House for over two years, the old lower office on New Quay is being leased out and Tozers do not provide office services for us anymore. Please make sure that all correspondence is sent to our new address: The Harbour Office, Old Quay House, Old Quay, Teignmouth, TQ14 8ES.
Remembering the fuel tank thefts of last year, we continue to advise that wherever possible you remove portable items from your boat when it is not in use and that you clearly mark your portable fuel tank with your mooring number as a minimum, that way if your tank is stolen and then found, although its contents will have been removed, we can at least return the tank to you.
Our Registration Scheme will continue to operate for watercraft this year; it is designed to educate rather than legislate and has a useful basic code of practice for water users. Those who are launching their vessels from trailers primarily from Polly Steps, Gales Hill, Wear Farm or Newton Abbot Town Quay and who do not have a mooring or are not registered members of Teign boating organisations are encouraged to register their vessels with the Harbour Commission. See Local Notice to Mariners.
The economic down turn has resulted in less tonnage being imported and exported from the harbour but the commitment to keeping an entrance channel has remained the same. This has resulted in an increase in Port Dues for importers and exporters to cover the costs of dredging. The dredger Mannin has visited twice so far this year to add to the efforts of the Teign C and this is all paid for out of Port Dues.
Summer is now upon us and much preparation and planning has been completed in order to welcome our mooring holders and visitors and to enable everyone to enjoy the harbour and estuary safely.
Moorings have been maintained, visitor pontoons have been refurbished and serviced and are ready to receive visiting vessels.
Much progress has been made in servicing our many mooring holders in answering queries and sorting out problems. New mooring allocations for those on the waiting lists are progressing and a real effort is being made to allocate as many as possible in order to get people afloat for the summer.
There are a number of temporary moorings available for visitors wishing to use their craft while on holiday and the Harbour Office will do their best to accommodate these needs if they are called or emailed.
The buoyage above the bridge has been cleaned and checked so the navigable channel is clearly marked but the paragraph under “navigation” should be read for those who are not familiar with the river.
The yellow buoyage off the main beaches at Dawlish, Teignmouth and the Ness are now deployed until October and mark zones that are dedicated to bathers. They have been laid by us for Teignbridge District Council; it is worth knowing the requirements of these zones by reading the Water Users Guide on the “navigation” page.
The Harbour Masters RIB will be operated during all the busy periods of the season including every weekend to ensure safety of navigation, good seamanship and responsible behavior.
We hope you all have a good summer season and we will endeavor to maintain a high standard of safety and meet the needs of the harbour users where ever possible.
The harbour team does provide a wide range of cover but are unable to be everywhere all the time.
If there are issues that you think we need to be aware of please call the Harbour Office or give us a call on VHF Channel 12 and let us know.
