Teignmouth has been an active trading port for more than three hundred years. It has successfully moved with the times and the changes in cargoes and handles more tonnage now than it has done at any time in its previous history. It is equipped to handle most types of cargo ranging from bulks, mini bulks to palletised, unitised and general cargo. Its main export is ball clay, which is mined locally at Kingsteignton.. Imports include animal feed, fertilizer, timber, building materials, stone and coal. There are over 800 shipping movements a year handling more than 600 thousand tonnes of cargo. Facilities Teignmouth can currently accommodate vessels of in excess of 100 metres in length and up to 5.0 metres draft on the highest spring tides. There are five working berths, which are fully equipped to handle a wide range of cargoes for both import and export. There is over 9,300 square metres of warehousing plus a large area of quayside storage supporting this. The port has a highly experienced team of pilots who navigate all vessels entering and leaving Teignmouth as well as managing all manoeuvring activities in the confines of the harbour. Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels in excess of 30 metres. Teignmouth also has a modern tug, which is able to assist vessels with limited manoeuvrability. The tug also provides assistance to vessels in nearby ports from time to time. The entrance to Teignmouth is regularly monitored and dredged to maintain a working channel at all times. Navigation Teignmouth lies on the north side of the River Teign. Position Latitude 50 33 N Longitude 3 30 W Admiralty Charts: Numbers 26 (Harbours on South Coast of Devon) and 3315 (Berry Head to Bill of Portland). All vessels over 30 metres in length are subject to compulsory pilotage for entering or leaving the harbour. Other seagoing vessels under 30 metres should consult the Harbour Master to obtain information and advice. Vessels without local knowledge should not enter or leave the harbour without notifying or seeking advice from the Harbour Master beforehand. Vessels should request pilotage from the agents or direct from the pilots 12 hours in advance stating ETA, length and precise draught. Vessels awaiting pilotage are recommended to anchor one mile south east of the Ness Headland subject to weather conditions and maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 12 unless otherwise directed by the Pilots. The Harbour Master may from time to time make general and/or specific directions. These will probably relate to safety of navigation and other related subjects and therefore need to be adhered to.
